Statement on the Indian Arts and Crafts Act

 

Jay Moody is an enrolled citizen of the Cheroenhaka-Nottoway Indian  Tribe, and of Muskogee Creek Heritage.  All artwork is authentic Native  American/American Indian art and conforms to the requirements of the  American Indian Arts and Crafts Act of 1990.

Earth lodges are sacred places to Southeastern Indians. They represented the womb of the earth and maternal spirit of the Corn Mother. They were often reserved for ceremonial occasions.


This is specifically a representation of an Earth Lodge located in  Ocmulgee National Monument near Macon, Georgia.

Forest Child is a representation of the mischievous spirits known to inhabit the deep forests and glens, existing in a state of perpetual revelry, sometimes helpful, but mostly playing practical jokes on unwitting travelers and hikers.

The turtle is a sacred creature to Creek and Cheroenhaka as well as many other Native Peoples, symbolizing earth, creation and primordial existence.  Here we have a medicine wheel, another sacred symbol superimposed upon its back as it is suspended in the air as the ultimate symbol of an earth, sky and creation.
